Lapps and labyrinths : Saami prehistory, colonization and cultural resilience
Walmart Services. Get to Know Us. They follow the footsteps of the reindeers because they believe that the reindeers know their way around nature. Another important concept that she presented is that humans borrow their home from the earth.
As taught by her parents and grandparents, we do not possess earth. Hence, we ought to leave it as it used to be when we first found it. We should leave it for at least four generations to come to enjoy. She mentions in her talk that a mining company have just been approved by Swedish government to mine for cooper and the location that they are going to carry out the mining process cuts through the reindeers natural path. To Sofia and her people, that is going to leave a huge impact on them as well as the natural ecological system in that region.

The negative impacts of human activities is already very evident, the weather is not how it used to be and huge amount of glaciers are melting causing icy grounds. Consequently, there is no food for animals to live off. Sofia set up a foundation called Arvas Foundation.
The name Arvas is from the name of her homeland. She hopes to increase the knowledge of indigenous people. As part of our class activity, we also looked at how the knowledge that we have learned about the Saami people linked to the Four Dimensions of Religion that Bruce Lincoln writes about. Nevertheless, there is something that continues to bother me about these different indigenous group that we have learned in class and the issues that are taking place in the world of modernization.
On one hand, indigenous people are eager to tell people who they are, make themselves known, and stand up for their rights, but I cannot imagine what this effort might snowball into.
Seeing the vast difference in regions influenced by modern advancement and technology and untouched regions, the culture, mindset, religion is so contradicting with one another. As these indigenous people strive to protect their sacred environment, how much of their own culture can they retain once they are exposed to the world of new, innovative, creative ideas and things? As Professor Uddin also mentioned about the Mashantucket Pequot Museum , there are many aspects of these indigenous cultures that are lost.
Lapps and Labyrinths by Noel D. Broadbent (ebook)
My believe is that it is because of the way majority of the human population are moving towards science and technology. Nonetheless, I am absolutely interested to discuss about this topic to see if there are alternative ways that could change the outcome of this discourse.
